Mayhem 337: Memoir of a Combat Advisor in Afghanistan by Chad Rickard

Late in 2008 Chad Rickard deployed as a member of a U.S. Army Combat Advisor team to the highly contested Khost Province of Eastern Afghanistan. As a senior infantry advisor, Rickard embedded with the Afghan Army and spent nine months slugging it out with Haqqani Taliban along the Pakistan border region in a deadly battle for control of Spera District. His riveting memoir brings recognition and honor to the Combat Advisor legacy that is but a footnote in U.S. military history.

In “Mayhem 337” Rickard powerfully recounts his experiences during periods of intense combat. He graphically describes fighting alongside Afghan Soldiers and U.S. Army Special Operations Forces from the streets of Khost City to the mountainous regions against numerically superior enemy forces.

    you matter book

About Featured Book: You Matter, even if you don’t think so by Joseph Binning

As we enter the year 2020, in a world that seems to be moving exponentially faster with each decade, we struggle more than ever to be relevant, influential, valuable, respected, seen, loved—and stay alive long enough to make it through the finish line. We live in a vast, unlimited Universe, so why do we press ourselves into such small boxes?

Joseph Binning, author of YOU MATTER…Even If You Don’t Think So, knows from personal experience that too many don’t make it to the finish line. Too many are not given the words, the instruction, or the hand we need to make it through. Too many of us do not believe that we really matter. Understanding who we are and what to do with this life we’re living is the hardest thing we’ll ever do. We need more than words—more than knowledge. We need a way to quiet the voices in our heads that make us want to give in. We need a reason strong enough to get to the finish line without quitting. We need a truth powerful enough to lift us out of the darkness.

From a throw-away child to a successful, heart-felt, self-made man, Joseph Binning knows first-hand that our past is not who we are. In fact, who we think we are is rarely who we truly are. It is only through opening our eyes to a new way of seeing—by setting aside our limited thoughts—that we understand, “When I let go of who I am, I become what I might be.”

In his self-discovery guide, YOU MATTER, Joseph takes our hand and leads us through each page of a truth-telling map to find our path—the path within ourselves where we discover the answers. Who am I? Why am I here? Am I worthy of love? How do I create a lasting relationship, work, and meaning in my life? What do I do now, and how do I do it? Joseph teaches us how to discover who we really are—and who we’re not—and how to know, trust, and follow the path in front of us. Most importantly, Joseph leads us to find compassion—for ourselves first, and then for others—to support our renewal, step out of doubt, anxiety, and disbelief, and move toward the finish line in clarity, certainty, and creation.

Taking us beyond 2020 vision, Joseph teaches us to look back only for a moment, to see how far we’ve come, but doesn’t let us stay there or press ourselves back into the box. Revealing the truth that lies within us, YOU MATTER shines the light on our greatness, until we can shine our own light, loving us enough until the day we can love ourselves enough to make it through. Joseph Binning is the voice of 2020 who shouts to each and every one of us, “Don’t give up, because YOU MATTER!…Even If You Don’t Think So. Purposeful

  • SMART Objective Setting for Managers by Irial O'Farrell

SMART Objective Setting for Managers by Irial O'Farrell

SMART Objective Setting for Managers by Irial O'Farrell

If you manage teams, what frustrates you the most? If you’re like most managers I’ve met, chances are it’s the way “Johnny communicates his ideas” or the way “Chrissy keeps asking you to talk to the other team, rather than just doing it herself” or how “Jamie keeps asking the same questions over and over!”. Developing these “soft” performance issues are very challenging. It can feel uncomfortable to raise the topic and many managers fear the conversation will go wrong. The 4 main struggles managers have with objective setting are:

    1. Defining the desired outcomes of performance
    2. Diagnosing team members’ individual starting points
    3. Defining tangible objectives for “soft” behavioural performance issues
    4. Understanding what can go wrong in the communication process, when agreeing objectives

SMART Objective Setting for Managers unpacks each of these challenges, culminating in a chapter dedicated to understanding how to diagnose and design objectives that address the “softer” performance issues. Being endlessly practical when it comes to the “how”, the book also provides a roadmap for preparing for and conducting objective setting meetings.

Told through stories and examples, feedback from readers include “I thought I already knew how to do this but I’ve learnt so much from this book”, “very easy to read and understand the learning points”, and “managers and employees should read this book”.

So if reducing your frustration while increasing your team’s motivation and engagement sounds like a good outcome for you, buy this book today and start finding out how to design and agree SMART objectives that will make a difference.

  • Self Help For Men

In this self help video for men, we will talk about how hard it can be to be a man. Yet did anyone tell exactly what it really means to be a man? This video is inspired by Anna Akana, who publishes self help videos. While self help videos for men are rare, she inspired the author of this video: Rokas Leonavicius (RokasLeo) in an AMA Anna did in a recent VidCon event. There Anna Akana said to the audience that self help videos for men are missing and that we need someone to share the “secrets” of men that are actually experienced by all of them, yet none of them talk about it. Thus came the idea to release a self help video for men about what it really means to be a man and how hard it is to be a man in modern days. Thank you again Anna Akana for your amazing work and inspiration! If you want to check the channel of Anna Akana who has inspired to publish this video, check her channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/AnnaAkana If you want to see more videos from RokasLeo you can check his main Aikido channel here: www.youtube.com/aikidosiauliai Or his official website: www.rokasleo.com To talk more about self help videos in general, self help is usually what most men avoid. Yet if you are watching this self help video you are already a step ahead. Most men look at self help as something that women do, but when you will watch this self help video you will learn that men need as much if not more self help, specially in questions on what it means to be a man. Suicide of men is more common by 1.8 points than women and mostly because men are avoiding to ask or search for help while trying to play a role of a man which causes a lot of extra stress. Self help men should definitely take into account. Otherwise if we will not figure out what it means to be a man we will not be able to help ourselves. Now to come back to the topic of self help, as mentioned before most men will not look into self help videos for men, despite it being crucial. As men we grow up looking at others and trying to figure out what it means to be a man with little help, while most show a bad example of what it means to be a man. Thus self help comes into play. If you want to be a good man, you need to first ask what are you really inspired about and what motivates you to watch these self help videos. While these self help videos are a good place to start, in order to be a real man you have to work on it yourself. I will share some life hacks in the next self help men video how to be a real man in daily life, without taking external false ideas on what it means to be a man. If you want more self help videos for men also make sure you subscribe to this channel, since I will be releasing more self help videos not just for men, but also for women and young people. In the end self help is not just about us, it’s about also helping other people by helping ourselves. The more quality self help videos online we will have, the more people will watch it, the better chance we will have at making this work!

About Featured Book: The Breast Defense is a Good Offense by Cathy Croshaw

It isn’t every day you find out that you have breast cancer right smack in the middle of moving into your dream home. And as far as Cathy Croshaw—attorney, wife, mother, and proud new owner of a house in Lake Tahoe, California—was concerned, cancer wasn’t on the schedule.

Caught up in the whirlwind of moving day, her life packed into boxes and her husband directing movers from room to room, Cathy got the kind of phone call no one wants to receive: The hospital that had performed her routine mammogram just the day before wanted her back as soon as possible to run some more tests. Soon after, an official breast cancer diagnosis pierced through the chaos of her bright, busy life, bringing with it an unexpected new reality for Cathy and her loved ones. What came next is a human story shared by women around the world, told with uncommon wit and clarity.

A human story shared by women around the world, told with uncommon wit and clarity.

From advocating for the right medical team to trying on wigs to grappling with unforeseen medical side effects, Cathy Croshaw's experience with breast cancer proves that few things in this world are a match for preventive screening, a strong support network, and wicked sense of humor.
