ON THE SIDES OF THE FREEWAY
Driving on the freeways of our nation this spring, travelers are treated with a display of wildflowers sprinkling the medians or the sides of the roads. Like a Norman Rockwell painting, the springtime blooms in glorious colors promise sojourners an exciting adventure ahead or reaffirm to homeward bound drivers that home is ultimately where the heart always longs to return to.
Uncultivated, un-manicured, unplanned and wild by our earthly standard but these flowers could be God's artistic reminder that beauty often comes naturally and unexpectedly. Most of us won't know what they are, but asking a botanist, and we'll be amazed as to the variety of the wild blooms canvassing the fields and the hills of our countryside. Just in Alabama for example, one can spot Azalea, Blue Bell, Buckeye, Buttercup at the beginning of the botanical alphabet all the way to Trout Lilly and Violet at its end. And even within Alabama, the locations and soil conditions will determine which particular species will thrive.
Going through life is a little like driving on the freeway. In the hustle and bustle of our days, we can completely miss the good and the beauty around us until one day, when we realize they're no longer here. Or we can slow down a bit and take the time to appreciate the gift a moment can bring. We should cherish and give thanks to those who bless us with their love, time or gifts and do so now rather than later. Let them know they are each a precious part of our journey and not mere randomness on the fringes of life. Just like the wild flowers on the sides of the freeway, they are a part of God's design for our lives and they may not be here tomorrow. Give thanks to God also for those who trouble or even torment us for they may also be a part of God's desire for our journeys. We might be the "flowers" that they need to see. If not, they might be the "fertilizer" for our own growth.
The next time I see wild flowers on the sides of a freeway, I will try to remember the blessings that God bestows on me, including the people that were, are and will be placed in my life and praise Him for His grace. And finally, there is nothing more beautiful than the love He has for me and you, through Jesus our Savior. His love is neither annual nor perennial but everlasting. The grass may wither and flowers may fall but His word and His love endure forever.
“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” Isaiah 40:8,NIV
